Derby Museum and Art Gallery
Steven Ingman
1st May 2010 - 4th July 2010
The noise of fast moving traffic, intense colours and glimpses of architectural forms erupting from the gloom; these split-second photo-memories of everyday sights are influenced by Ingman's transition from a rural childhood to city life and the 'urban shock' he experienced.
The paintings in Night Light capture the assault on the artist's senses made by his nocturnal surroundings and articulate his impulse to paint cities in the dark.
Initially Steven captures his surroundings digitally using a long exposure time to emphasise the mechanised locations and generate abstracted images. The strange photographic anomalies of blurring movement, streaks of car lights and floating luminescent orbs are then extracted and painted onto canvas.
Pickford's House - Museum of Georgian Life and Historic Costume In the autumn of 1773, Joseph Wright departed for a 'Grand Tour' of Italy in search of patronage and artistic inspiration. This he discovered among the ruins of ancient Rome, the dramatic landscape of Italy, and the people he encountered. This exhibition re-traces Wright's footsteps through sketches, journal entries and letters to provide a fascinating and intimate glimpse of the artist's experiences abroad. The tour was a journey of personal and professional enlightenment which had a profound effect on Wright's work. Thursday 2nd September 2010, 1pm - 2pm, free of charge. 1st June 2010 - 31 July 2010

Portrait of a City: Nottingham Names and Faces
26 June - 18 September
Plus new work by Jo Metson-Scott and Styling Project II
People make a place, shape its landscape, create its buildings, fire its economy and most importantly give it the life and character that set it apart from any other place. Nottingham is the vibrant city we see in 2010 because of the contribution over centuries of many people from the city and the wider conurbation in which it sits. Some of these people are famous; some as yet 'unsung heroes'. Portrait of the City brings these faces to the fore, through paintings, photographs, sculpture and drawings, and celebrates there role each one has played in 'making Nottingham'. The exhibition also offers art lovers and students alike the opportunity to explore the history of portraiture.
The exhibition will include a 17 portraits loan from the National Portrait Gallery, as well as portraits from NCMG's collection alongside newly-commissioned photographs by Jo Metson-Scott of Nottingham people nominated by NCMG's People's Panel as 'unsung heroes'. Now based in London, Jo Metson-Scott is a Nottingham-born contemporary photographer who works internationally for publications such as the Guardian, Daved and Confused.
Styling Project II showcases photographs which will be produced during a fashion shoot in the fabulous location of Nottingham Castle. MA students from NTU will style models in response to hidden corners of the grounds, the atmosphere of the caves and the grandeur of the Long Gallery and capture them on film.
