Phil Biggs Demonstration 27-03-25

On the evening of March 27th, the CDPG had the pleasure of hosting a captivating demonstration by Phil Biggs, a self-taught artist renowned for his expertise in watercolour painting.  Phil, who prefers to keep his outdoor painting kit simple and uncluttered, relies on just a pencil, brush, watercolours, and quality paper to create his stunning works.

Based in Lincolnshire, Phil runs a studio where he offers one-on-one tuition and conducts demonstrations and workshops for local art groups.

During the demonstration, Phil provided valuable insight into the art of painting watercolour landscapes.  He began with a preparatory tonal sketch in Paynes Grey, explaining how these initial drawings can significantly assist in the creation of the final watercolour piece.  Attendees were treated to the step-by-step process of transforming a simple sketch into a beautiful representation of a British Landscape.

Phil emphasized the importance of using photographs for initial composition, demonstrating how to manipulate elements such as light and shadow, as well as applying artistic license to enhance the overall appeal of the artwork.  His extensive knowledge and engaging presentation style kept the audience captivated and he was more than willing to address all questions regarding watercolour techniques.

The evening was further enriched by the presence of several guest visitors, including two enthusiastic young ladies from Loughborough University, who thoroughly enjoyed the demonstration.  Phil’s passion for watercolour painting was infectious, inspiring some guests to consider joining the club as new members!

Overall, the demonstration was a resounding success, leaving attendees inspired and eager to explore the world of watercolour painting further.  Thank you, Phil Biggs, for an enlightening and enjoyable evening, we would also like to thank Phil for his kind donation of 2 watercolours, which he painted with the group.
